Wait, that is actually every episode of Blossom?  My bad.   On this weeks podcast we are talking about the latest and greatest in technology.     Including those know-it-alls and masters-of-the-future Apple’s fancy new Tablet.     What if any impact do all these tech inventions have on our favourite geek media?   Has the way we consume movies, TV and comics been forever altered?

Get on your computer machine or interactive phone device and access the compu web to hyperlink to The Atomic Geeks iradio techno show to find out!

  1. downs says:

just a heads up and apology for the audio quality of this episode
    specially near the end
not sure what happened but something in skype fucked up
    damn technology
    never gonna last

  2. Geekarino says:

One would hope that after 2012 a new world will arise. A world of sorcery and super science!

  3. Christian says:

Geek-O! Thundarr the Barbarian reference if I’m not mistaken? CT should be on here any second to expound his love of that cartoon. I love the fact that it takes place in 1994. It also makes me feel safe again.

  4. Geekarino says:

It is indeed a Thundarr reference. I don’t know about feelin’ safer though.
When I was a kid I had hoped that by 1999 we’d all be living on the moon wearing bell bottoms and platform shoes. I pray that the 25th century, where everyone wears spandex comes in my lifetime. Beety beety!

  5. Christian says:

Well safe in the realization that 1994 has passed and we haven’t got hit by a meteor and forced to wear furry underpants.

  6. Geekarino says:

Who says that I don’t wear the furry underpants anyway. Ariel…Ookla…Rideeeeeee!

  7. (raises glass) TO OOKLA THE MOK!

WASTING Away .. that is the name of the movie in my atomic pic
    not fading away…
i know what you are thinking
but do as many drugs as I have done and see if you can remember anything older than 48 hours
I’m like Leonard in Memento just without the actual disease as the reason for not remembering
    ..

WASTING away that was the name of the movie in my atomic pick
    NOT fading away
when you’ve done as many …

    see what i did there?

  10. Finished listening. Good episode, guys. Lots of great discussion.

When it comes to this iPad thing, I think it’s cool and can definitely see the potential for it, but I’m with Andrew, I’m going to wait a while before jumping on this. I’ll get version 2 or 3. I wish there was a camera and a few other features. As a reader, it’s got appeal. And as someone who works in the publishing industry, I’m definitely hopeful it will save some of us. I hope companies are smart about creating content for it though. Not sure what I mean by that, but I just have this sense that some companies might rush to create something for it and it not be ideal.

One of the biggest problems comic companies have created for themselves as far as what’s killing the industry is the birth of the direct market. I love going into comic shops, but offering comics exclusively in specialty stores and not in grocery stores or other mass market newsstands has been a key problem for comic companies and has also resulted in the higher price point which has then in turn caused us aging fans to not be able to afford comics. The iPad can offer a new distribution point at a lower price point and have a chance to save the industry.

This can also only be a good thing for indy comic producers who no longer have to pay expensive printing costs and deal with Diamond Comics and their horrible distribution methods. However, this easier method of distribution will cause greater competition and could ultimately cause it to be hard for good stuff to be noticed.

I also enjoyed the discussion on illegally downloading (or what I’m just going to start calling downs-loading). Very interesting points from all of you.

Thanks DiGio for the shout out in your Atomic Pick. That Red Letter Media guy is hysterical. There’s actually a strange continuity that exists with his reviews and from what I gather, the order to watch them in is ST: Generations, ST: First Contact, ST: Insurrection, ST: Nemesis, SW: Phantom Menace. I hate all five of those movies but in some weird way their existence has been redeemed through these Red Letter Media reviews.

    Gret episode guys!

You guys were actually the first place i heard about the iPad and i must say it sounds pretty awesome tho i must aggree that i dont thik i will get one for a year or two based on the fact that its a Gen1 product for its type and really though the hardware will more than likely be awesome i do agree that it is the software and content that will make or break this product in the long term.

you guys made some great points about the comic book industry and although i have recently started buying more i do agree the thing holding me back from buying a bunch every week is the 3-5$ price per comic. as far as downloading comics i have also dabbled in that area but i could never really get into it becasue the page sizez were never formated properly for a computer screen. i think that with the advent of the iPad and other iPad-ish devices it definately gives the comic industry a new possibility for “starting over” and making money again but it all depends on the format and the price and way you go about buying them.

Downs~~~ For the love of all that is Geeky stop talking about your awesome Mac Mini, your making me want to buy one for its media streaming capabilities even though I have an HP Tablet PC, Xbox360, PS3 and a regular desktop computer and i cant get any of them to network together so i dont see how or why i would be able to get this working right. although i do agree with you that having a computer next to your tv instead or to compliment your cable/satalite. Computers like the Eee Box and Mac Mini are just a couple of the great ,and pretty, little HD compatible computers available to consumers now for under $500 and with open source software that keeps getting better this is definately an area of technology that will definately be growing pretty fast over the next few years.

    Keep em comin guys!

  12. Downs says:

hey guys thanks for the feedback
great points from both of you

this was one of our more serious discussions
and with the downloading thing a bit touchy probably

    thanks for the feedback
    totally appreciate it

  13. geekygirl64 says:

I for one will be first in line for the ipad…i think it’s awesome and will be a great and easy-to-use tool for my kid starting h.s. I know how much i love my ipod touch so it will be the same, just bigger, better and with the ability to hold books!

Trying to decipher downs xbmc thing….can you tell me the name of that plug-in again?

Love your show – happy anniversary, boys!

  14. downs says:

    hey geekygirl64
that plug in is called NAVI X
in fact I’ve done a bit more digging
there are in fact tons of plugins
    each with their own qualities
for instance navi x has a ton o movies and tv
    no porn though
    like zip
    that is another plug in
then there are entire plug ins just for podcasts
    or games
    or other shite

so go forth and take things without paying for them
    i command it

  15. geekygirl64 says:

    i love you mike downs

  16. downs says:

    I love you too geekygirl64
but I do feel the need to see other people

  17. geekygirl64 says:

mike, ok, but if we’re going to have an open relationship, i’m going to be listening to other men on podcasts. i mean fair is fair….
