I Needs Me Some TV
Posted By Downs on January 7, 2010
So as I mentioned off the top of this week’s podcast. I need some new shit to watch and I’m looking for YOUR help.
Shit I have seen so don’t bother suggestin:
The WIRE – fuckin awesome
Stargate SG 1 – duh
Stargate Atlantis – awesome
Buffy – I was buffy before buffy was cool bitches
Angel – obviously
DEADWOOD – fuckin brilliant
Californication – just finished
Entourage – been there, done that
Sopranos – of course
Sons of Anarchy – come on
Dexter – again, watched since day one
BSG – best SCI FI of all time
Firefly – amazing, ended way too soon
Smallville – a bit behind but catching up
Generation Kill – GREAT show
X Files
Millenium – fucking great show
The Office – UK
The Office – US
John Doe
Alias
Veronica Mars – A Mark Dury suggestion !!
Arrested Development
Eastbound and Down
True Blood
OK So now the list of things I have watched or am watching due to this thread:
The IT Crowd – Fucking Brilliant!! you should watch this
The Shield – just about done the first season, very good cop drama

I know it’s been mentioned on the show before but Star Wars:The Clone Wars…it is really good.
And for God’s sake…or well for Christian’s sake…WATCH CHUCK
A few suggestions for TV on DVD:
1. Black Books
2. Freaks and Geeks
3. The Young Ones
4. The Adventures of Brisco County
5. The I.T. Crowd
I know. A lot of Brit TV.
Here are a few suggestions (not sure if you have seen any of these)-
1) Alias. Good JJ Abrams pre- Awesome JJ Abrams
2) Star Trek DS9- Laugh oh yes laugh. But once it gets rolling…you’ll like
3) Supernatural
4) Star Wars Clone Wars
Hey Geekarino….I’ve always been curious of Brisco County. Was that good?
Hey Michael,
Brisco County was excellent! Especially if you like Bruce Campbell and Sho-nuff from Last Dragon. It’s a great Western with elements of Sci-Fi in it. It’s also got one of the best performances of John Astin aka Gomez Adams aka father of Samwise Sean Astin. It’s also got hot chicks.
I second the Brisco suggestion. It’s awesome. Also, I second the DS9 and Alias suggestions.
Here are some more:
- Futurama
- Veronica Mars (very cool show much in the same vein as Buffy without the supernatural stuff)
- The West Wing (not very geeky, but well-written for the first few years)
- Arrested Development (I think you guys have mentioned watching this so surprised it’s not on your list)
- 24 (you like Keifer, right?)
- MI-5 (BBC show much like 24 and at times, it’s better than 24)
- Doctor Who (the current series is admittedly not for everyone, but quite enjoyable and a definite improvement on the original)
- The Bruce Timm DC stuff: Batman, Superman, Justice League
And best of all…
- FARSCAPE (it takes about a half a season to get good and the rest of the first season to get great, but it’s some of the best television I’ve ever seen and the wrap-up movie is the best four hours of television ever produced)
Downs mentioned The Shield on our recent show and I have it on good authourity that this show is supposed to be super awesome. That’s awesome with a little bit of super so you know it’s good.
I just happen to have borrowed a copy of the entire series of the Emmy Award winning series Freaks & Geeks from our substitute geek host, Mark Dury. I’m anxious to see this so stay tuned for a future ATOMIC PICK.
Like Mr. Downs I’ve also been looking for a series to just blow through at my own pace. Alias is a good possibility. But for some stupid reason and I think I’ve mentioned this on the show, I’ve had a yearning to watch episodes of The Rockford Files. Supposed to be one of the most unconventional yet entertaining private eye shows ever made.
The good thing is that a ton of the older TV series are going for dirt cheap at your local big box entertainment stores. Yes my friends, it’s good to be a geek.
I didn’t mention classic series, Christian. I did an A-Team marathon awhile back that was thoroughly enjoyable except for that lousy last season. After that, I started going through Rockford Files and eventually did some Magnum, PI. My free time has been recently shot in the head so I’ve put all that on hold, but I’d recommend all three of those series and then next on my list was going to be Miami Vice. Once I’m done with grad school, I’ll be getting back into these older shows.
If we’re talking “classic tv” you should also check out the 1st season of Kojak. It’s hard hitting and it’s great to see NYC when it was still seedy and gritty in the early 1970’s. The pilot alone had both Harvey Keitel and David Proval from Mean Streets in it. There’s also a great later episode with Stallone as a cop who shoots a little kid by “mistake”.
It’s kind of old now but ESPN’s Playmakers series was great. A pretty quality football drama that got canned because of objections by the NFL for it’s portrayal of athletes.
If you haven’t seen it yet you’ve got to check out HBO’s “Eastbound and Down” Danny Mcbride as a washed up former MLB pitcher forced to live with his older brother in his home town. That sounds like a crappy lifetime movie from my description but it’s got tits, drugs, and all sorts of great jokes. Easily one of my top series of last year.
holy feeuck
what a response
sorry it took awhile for me to get back ya’s
i went and saw avatar
AWESOME
ok so let me respond to a couple that i have seen that are obvious too
24 obviously watched a bit of that but could never get back into it
ALIAS – classic
Veronica Mars – awesome
Arrested development – jes of course
and sorry Christian but Chuck didnt make the cut
I’m working on The Shield right now and the I.T. Crowd
Briscoe county is a great suggestion, I love Bruce Campbell and never watched it so great one
thanks again everyone
some good ones out there
keep it comin
Hey gentlemen,
First, thanks for the on-air shout out. Totally made my day.
TV shows i have to mention:
– Arrested Development (brilliant and canceled too soon but apparently in the works to become a movie)
– The Shield seems to have gotten some well deserved shout outs
– Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (amazing show that makes fun of old cheesy movies. Some are admittedly duds but others are shart out loud funny)
– X-Files (i really never got into this when it was on tv but i think the full series can be bought for about 100 bones so i may purchase this and catch up what i missed out on. Something like 10 seasons to plough through i think)
- The Office (British is the best but the US is good on in its own right)
- House (sarcastic and snarky equal fun to watch)
- Curb Your Enthusiasm (the absolute most awkward show to watch but for some reason i keep going back for more)
- Batman the Animated Series (brilliant Batman stories that are short, dark and of course did huge things for animated series’ in general)
I don’t think i’m really bringing any new or unique suggestions to the list but Downs, you should be able to find something you haven’t really gotten in to yet to scratch that itch…not that itch, the other one!
Can’t wait to hear what you decide on.
Keepin it real in the hizzo,
Huffsman
I just remembered another couple of great British shows on dvd:
Red Dwarf – Star Trek meets Monty Python-AWESOME
The Mighty Boosh-If you grew up on Sid and Marty Croft this will appeal to you.
I second the BBC version of The Office that Huffsman said and the Red Dwarf suggestion that Geekarino said.
Not too long ago, I watched all the X-Files episodes and Lone Gunman shows in the span of about 13 months. I have mixed feelings about that show. There are parts I love and parts I absolutely hate. But, it’s worth going through if you haven’t seen those. So I guess that’s me seconding Huffsman’s suggestion there, too.
You like the HBO, then you should enjoy Rome, only lasted 2 seasons, but it was epic. There is a gladiator fight scene in one episode that is handsdown the most brutal, graphic fight I’ve ever seen on TV. oh look, here it is!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvDfsjIuf34
I can also vouch for The Shield, it ran 7 seasons, I’ve seen 5 of them, really cool.
And of course, Mad Men.
Downs,
If you liked the X-Files and something like Lost, try Millennium. It was made by Chris Carter and had one X-Files cross-over. It only lasted three seasons, but it was great, ahead of it’s time.
I second Dury’s call on Rome. Pretty darn great.
ok guys
thanks for all the great suggestions
ive updated the thread with stuff ive already seen but had forgotten about
as well as updated my two newest shows
Hey Downs,
A little late to the party but did you ever see the TV show called “Dead Like Me”?
Friggin’ great.
Kho
Kho
Never too late man, this thread is ALIVE
it is the interweb after all
GREAT call on Dead like me, I have seen it
Even seen the most recent direct to DVD movie that continued the series
Good call though really really good show
Hey guys – great podcast!
A show I picked up recently and really enjoyed was Reaper.
It’s like Supernatural but with lots of laughs thrown in. The main character finds out that his parents sold his soul to the devil before he was born, so he has to do the devil’s bidding… in the form of being a bounty hunter for hell. Then hilarity ensues. It only ran two seasons, but I really enjoyed both of them.
Keep up the good work!
Seth
TemplarSeth! Reaper! It is a good show. I’m pretty sure Downs has seen it but I haven’t. I think I barely got into the first season. Got as far as the episode with Patton Oswalt played that dude with the Bushwacker gun arm. Great show! On my “To Do” list of I’ll finish it one day.
You have to watch AMC’s Breaking Bad. One of the best shows on television.
Have you seen “Spaced” with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost?? Great Tv Series.
hey guys
both great suggestions
is breaking bad that good matt?
may have to check that one out
joe
i actually have caught i think 2 episodes of space
freakin hilarious
good one for me to get back too
@downs Yes it is. Bryan Cranston(The dad from malcolm in the middle) is phenomenal in it. The second season is probably one of my favorite seasons of any t.v show I have ever watched.
